Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A fine stirrup portrait vessel showing a standing warrior. He is portrayed as a younger man with bulging eyes and a serious expression. He has finely detailed hands which hold a mace and small shield. He wears a cross-hatched helmet with a strap under the chin, huge disc-shaped earrings, and, at his belt, a hanging jaguar pelt. He is overall painted dark red with cream-colored clothing and dark red details. This would have been a portrait of an important member of Moche society. Furthermore, it is possible - even probable - that there are portraits of him as an older man found in other vessels, as we know of several examples of Moche portrait vessels portraying the same individual at different stages of life! Size: 4.45" W x 8.5" H (11.3 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from the 1970s to 2008
