Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 700 CE; Colombia, Quimbaya, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A pair of terracotta figural vessels representing two distinct traditions of Pre-Columbian South America. The first, from the Moche culture of coastal Peru, depicts a rounded-bodied figure with modeled facial features rising at the neck. Vessels of this type were often created for ritual or funerary contexts, their humanized forms embodying themes of identity, status, and the intimate connection between vessel and body. he second, from the Quimbaya culture of Colombia’s Cauca River region, portrays a seated individual with incised detailing on the torso and legs. The vessel is ingeniously designed with a spout at the crown of the head, while the figure raises one hand to the mouth in a gesture that suggests symbolic action or ritual significance. The stylized face, broad features, and integrated handle reflect the Quimbaya aesthetic, in which abstraction and figural form merge in ceremonial pottery. Size of larger (Quimbaya): 4" L x 4.9" W x 6.7" H (10.2 cm x 12.4 cm x 17 cm)

Together, these works reveal the diverse ways in which Pre-Columbian artists transformed clay into vessels that were both functional and charged with meaning.
