Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is a nicely intact example of one of the classic forms of pre-Columbian pottery -- the Moche stirrup vessel, using the shape of a seated human body and attaching a handle to create a ceremonial drinking vessel. A vessel like this would most likely have been created for a member of the elite and placed in their tomb as a grave offering to demonstrate their wealth as they began their journey into the afterlife. The figure is one of the enduring images of the pre-Columbian peoples of the Andes, a laborer carrying a load on their back via a strap that wraps around their forehead. Size: 6.25" L x 4.25" W x 7.75" H (15.9 cm x 10.8 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Americas Artifacts, Roswell, GA, USA; Ex-Private Georgia Collection; Ex-William and Carol Thibadeau, acquired 1960s through 1980s
