Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Mochica/Huari Transition period, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A fabulous textile border panel comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vibrant hues of crimson, cobalt, wheat, cream, emerald, and salmon. The vertically-oriented rectangular panel displays a wondrous scene of two highly-stylized zoomorphic figure. The top panel portrays a monkey with sinuous limbs, diamond-shaped eyes, and a sinuous tail, and the bottom panel shows a jaguar with a trio of curved legs, a bushy tail, and a pink, heart-shaped head with tall ears. A vertical panel of stepped waves delineates the lateral border, and a trio of abstract tiered structures separate the two zoomorphic illustrations. Mounted against a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 5.2" W x 15.7" H (13.2 cm x 39.9 cm); size (frame): 6.8" W x 17.7" H (17.3 cm x 45 cm).
