**Originally Listed At $400**

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit / Yupik, ca. early 20th century CE. A miniature hunter in a kayak, the figure is constructed as a torso only, with cotton cloth stuffed with filling to form the upper body, dressed in a hooded parka of seal fur. His face is crafted from cloth with embroidered features. He holds a cedar wood harpoon under one arm, with a carved bone toggling head and sinew cord leash. The kayak itself is made with animal skin stretched over a cedar wood framework, echoing the construction of full-sized vessels. Additional bone toggles and leather thongs secure a second harpoon is lashed across the top, and a leather holster holds a miniature removable wooden rifle. For the Inuit, the kayak was essential for transportation, seal hunting, and fishing, and considered a hunter's most prized possession. Miniature versions such as this were crafted both as demonstrations for European traders fascinated by their ingenious design and later as souvenirs, toys, and works of art.
