Description:

Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Mogollon culture, ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. A hand-built earthenware jar of confident form, its globular body rising to a slightly offset neck fitted with a single strap handle, the surface decorated in red and dark brown on a pale buff and gray ground. Paneled geometric ornament encircles the shoulder, incorporating nested rectangular meanders, bold vertical striping, and radiating linear elements that reflect the increasingly complex painted programs characteristic of the Reserve and Tularosa phases of the Mogollon tradition. The lower body retains a warm red slip, and fire-clouding across the base attests to an open firing atmosphere. Vessels of this painted sophistication represent the mature flowering of Mogollon ceramic art in the upland Southwest, a tradition that paralleled and intersected with contemporaneous Anasazi developments to the north. Size: 5.5" D x 6.1" H (14.0 cm D x 15.5 cm H)

Provenance: private Fresno, California, USA Collection; ex-Hill Auction Gallery, Florida, USA
