Description:

East Asia, China, late Ming to early Qing Dynasty., ca. 1600 - 1799 CE. A nearly life-sized wood sculpture of Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, shown seated in meditation on a cloth draped plinth with legs crossed and one hand raised in the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching. She wears flowing robes with layered necklaces and a high ornate crown centering on a small image of Amitabha Buddha - signifying Guanyin's role as his compassionate emanation and confirming her identity as the Bodhisattva of Mercy. Pigments enrich the surface in red and black hues, further darkened by age and patina acquired through centuries of veneration. A rectangular niche panel is cut into the back - once serving as a consecration cavity to enshrine sacred materials such as sutra scrolls, relics, or offerings - attesting to the sculpture's original ritual function. Size: 34" L x 18" W x 57.5" H (86.4 cm x 45.7 cm x 146 cm)
