Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Moquegua culture, ca. 1000 CE. A large and finely-crafted textile sash comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers in vivid hues of crimson, jade, navy, wheat, and cream. The sash is decorated with ten abstract mask-like faces with spiralized eyes, triangular ears, and rhombus-shaped mouths, all presented atop a red ground. A beautiful example from the Moquegua! Mounted on black cloth backing. Size (textile): 29.625" L x 4" W (75.2 cm x 10.2 cm); size (backing): 46.25" L x 26.5" W (117.5 cm x 67.3 cm).
