Description:

George Morland (British, 1762/63 - 1804) after Peter Paul Rubens. "Diana Returning from the Hunt" miniature painting on ivory, 1780. Signed "Morland 1780" at lower left. A lovely painting on ivory by British artist George Morland after "Diana Returning from the Hunt" by Dutch Master Peter Paul Rubens. The idyllic scene shows the Roman goddess Diana accompanied by her nymphs and hunting dogs as she is greeted by three satyrs who carry a bounty of fruits and vegetables. Intended as a celebration of abundance and the daily rejuvenation of nature, the composition is divided by Diana's spear which symbolically separates the lascivious world of the satyrs from the virtuous realm of Diana and her nymphs. Diana who, as patron and guardian of the virtue of purity, resists every challenge while guiding her companions, and the world of darkness, ruled by the lowest of urges, which is represented by the three satyrs overwhelmed by lust. Size of painting: 5.5" W x 4.125" H (14 cm x 10.5 cm); of frame: 8" W x 7.4" H (20.3 cm x 18.8 cm)

George Morland was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting. Much of his work was intended for reproduction in prints, from which his publishers made a good deal more money than he did. Despite being a heavy drinker who enjoyed a rackety lifestyle, he was enormously prolific, though the quality of his work increasingly suffered. After many troubles with debts in his last decade, he died at the age of 41.
