Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Acheulean tradition, ca. 1.6 million to 200,000 years ago. An expertly knapped chert hand axe, in the characteristic ovoid shape of this early hand tool. It has a thin profile and slight corseting at the butt; at the opposite end it tapers to a blade edge. The color of the blade is a beautiful warm brown with undertones of pale pink. The Acheulean stone tool tradition, named after the location in France where tools of this kind were first identified in 1847, represented a technological revolution. These items were likely manufactured by homo erectus, a close ancestor of modern humans, and was made to be used in a variety of tasks. For most of human history - over a million years - this was the dominant technology. Axes like is one have a nice heft and fit squarely in even a modern hand.
