Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic to Roman period, ca. 332 BCE to 200 CE. A mold-formed faience amulet covered in attractive layers of blue-green glaze, depicting Bes, the dwarf-form deity who protected the women and children of a household. The nude deity stands facing forward with bent legs and arms to his sides, and the characteristic facial expression (although slightly worn) with his tongue protruding from his mouth and a furrowed brow, a lion-mane beard, and pointed ears, all beneath a flared headdress. The charm is pierced from the top of the headdress to the feet for suspension. Size: 0.45" L x 0.2" W x 0.8" H (1.1 cm x 0.5 cm x 2 cm); 2.3" H (5.8 cm) on included custom stand.
