Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic period, ca. 4000 to 3000. A fascinating artifact from the early agricultural period of ancient Egypt that set the stage for the glory of the Dynastic period to come: a flattish, roughly oval grinding stone, made from pale sandstone. Note the light scratches and smoothed surfaces from ancient use. Grain cultivated in this area included emmer wheat, barley, and flax, all of which needed to be ground by hand using tools like this one. Size: 2.9" L x 1.3" W x 4.2" H (7.4 cm x 3.3 cm x 10.7 cm)
