Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic period, Naqada, ca. 3000 BCE. A fascinating pottery vessel presenting a conical body with horizontally ribbed walls that taper to a narrow base. The exterior of the broad rim is enveloped in a black band that nicely complements the redware surface. Black-topped pottery was characteristic of the earliest periods of Egyptian civilization. It was fired upside down with the top buried in sand, depriving the clay of oxygen and resulting in the distinct coloration. Size: 3" Diameter x 4.1" H (7.6 cm x 10.4 cm)
