Description:

Ancient Seas, Morocco, Devonian Period, ca. 416 to 358.2 million years ago. A remarkable Burmeisterella trilobite fossil, displayed upon a natural sandstone matrix with exceptional preparation. The specimen's elongated body is almost entirely liberated from the surrounding stone, the cephalon and thorax dramatically elevated above the stone - as if floating along the ocean floor. The pronounced tail spine of Burmeisterella, known as the telson, resembles that of modern horseshoe crabs, serving a similar function in aiding balance and steering while swimming. The sharply defined axial ribs, spines, and articulated segmentation capture the distinctive morphology of this ancient arthropod in superb detail. Size: 6.5" L x 4" W x 3" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm x 7.6 cm) Size: 6.5" L x 4" W x 3" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally excavated and prepared. Restoration with new material to the genal spines to the side of the head and tail spine. Losses to surface layers on the thorax, with overpainting to the surface. Rare specimen, a nice example! The stone matrix base is mounted in a simple Tupperware container via metal bolts to protect the fossil during shipping and storage. The bolts are removable and trilobite can be removed from the container (carefully!).
