Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chontal, Ca 800 to 400 BCE. As Chontal stone work goes, they really do not get much finer. The degree of workmanship, and the various details sets this as one that truly is museum grade! Standing green-stone figure of a male - possibly in death. His eyes and mouth are closed slits, his nose is a continuation from a very strong brow-line, cheeks are raised, hands to his belly, legs with delineated knees and finally, his toes and fingers are string cut. This figure clearly shows the various methods employed in the construction. You can see that the entire figure was pecked from a much larger stone, with evidence of this pecking obvious where his arms meet the torso (front and back), and also with small pecking still visible inside his legs. The major features were then string cut to create eyes, mouth, fingers and toes. Finally, the entire figure was painstakingly polished by hand for days, weeks perhaps even months. 5-3/8" H.
