Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador/Colombia, Carchi-Narino region, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A charming and rare ceramic sculpture of a seated coca chewer. He sits on a stool, part of an integrated plaque, his long, spindly limbs giving him a slightly comical form. He wears a band, decorated with incised cross-hatching, around his body, but appears to be otherwise nude, with exposed genitalia. His mouth is open and his eyes closed, emphasizing that he is in the act of using the drug, probably to enter a religious/shamanic state. Size: 5" L x 3.5" W x 6.1" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex-private R. Heinz collection
