Lot 176
Pre-Columbian, Colombia and Ecuador, Narino culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A striking pottery vessel modeled in the form of a gourd, its rounded body tapering into a slender spout with a circular aperture on the side. The surface is richly painted in red, cream, and black pigments, arranged in bold geometric panels divided by vertical registers. Each panel is decorated with diamond motifs enclosing concentric circles, framed by stepped and linear designs that echo the symmetry and rhythm of textile patterns. The Narino people, inhabiting the highland valleys of present-day southern Colombia and northern Ecuador, are celebrated for their mastery of polychrome ceramics. Vessels like this gourd-shaped example likely held ritual significance, used in feasting, offerings, or as prestige items in burials. The choice of a gourd form reflects the agricultural abundance of the region, gourds being essential containers in daily and ceremonial life. Size: 6.3" Diameter x 7.8" H (16 cm x 19.8 cm)
Narino painted ceramics are distinguished by their use of contrasting color fields and intricate geometric schemes, embodying both artistic innovation and symbolic meaning. This vessel captures the refined aesthetic of the culture, balancing form and surface decoration with elegance.
