Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwestern United States, Alaska, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A compelling group of traditional subsistence tools, hand-crafted for hunting, fishing, and fire-making. This set includes a carved halibut hook fashioned from cedarwood into a V-shaped form with leather cords, a bone barb, its surface decorated with a flatfish motif. The small spear or fishing leister, features a wood shaft with walrus ivory tips and sinew bindings. Also present is a fishing reel comprising a wood slat with wrapped cotton cord and a carved bone lure, rigged with a curved iron hook. Completing the ensemble is a traditional bow drill, with a wooden bow, stone disc flywheel, and a repurposed iron file acting as the drill bit - tools such as these were essential for fire-starting or boring into materials like ivory or wood. Size of halibut hook: 1.5" L x 5.5" W (3.8 cm x 14 cm)
