Description:

Native American / First Nations, Northwestern United States, Alaska, or Canada, Inuit culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. This collection comprises traditional Native Alaskan fishing implements alongside a cedarwood float carving. The curved cedar piece serves as a short fishing pole and reel, wound with cotton line attached to a baleen hook. Three barbed iron hooks are mounted on shimmering abalone shell and polished bone lures, shaped to mimic bait fish and attract larger catches. Completing the set is a carved cedar float, its charred rounded form featuring a stylized human face - an artful transformation of traditional fishing net floats or beads, often produced as sale pieces. Size of cedar fishing rod: 15" L x 1" W (38.1 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private El Dorado Hills, California, USA collection
