Description:

Bob Peasley "Raven" (Native American, Oglala Lakota, b. 1932) "Old Chief Portrait Mask," ca. 1976 CE. A masterfully hand-carved cedar wood portrait mask by Bob Peasley, known by his carving name "Raven." This expressive mask, titled Old Chief Portrait Mask, depicts a Salish elder with remarkable realism, featuring deeply incised wrinkles and white horsehair. Although portrait masks were less common among the Salish, chiefs would sometimes commission master carvers of other tribes, such as the Haida or Tsimshian, for important works. According to a signed paper, Peasley stated that the creation of this mask involved three separate carving attempts to perfect the final result, and is intended for actual ceremonial use. The mask is dated on the interior "76" and possibly has a registration number: I.A.C.A. #053CY. An exceptional ceremonial mask that honors the wisdom of age and Peasley's outstanding cross cultural craftsmanship. Size: 11.75" L x 9" W (29.8 cm x 22.9 cm)

Bob Peasley (b. 1932), known by his carving name "Raven," is an Oglala Lakota artist celebrated for his masterful woodcarving in the traditions of the Northwest Coast. Peasley studied at the University of Washington, the University of British Columbia, and the Provincial Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, supplementing his academic training with extensive fieldwork across Indigenous villages throughout the Pacific Northwest. Immersing himself in the diverse carving traditions of these communities, he developed expertise particularly in the creation of totem poles and ceremonial masks. Among his notable public works is a 25-foot Haida-style totem pole in Scappoose, Oregon, commissioned in 1988 and dedicated in 1990, now cataloged by the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventory of American Sculpture. Throughout his career, Peasley has received numerous honors, including multiple awards - first, second, third place, and "Best in Class" - at the 45th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico. He has also participated in international cultural exchange programs, hosting master carvers from Sierra Leone under the auspices of the African-American Exchange Institute. Today, Peasley resides in a self-built complex on the shores of a lake at the base of the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon, where he maintains indoor and outdoor studios. His work continues to be highly sought after by collectors, museums, and galleries for its unique fusion of Plains and Northwest Coast carving traditions.
