Native American, Northwestern United States, Columbia River Plateau, ca. 1000 CE or older. A large grinding stone and woven basketry mat fragments. The mats are pliable, made from a loose weave. These fragments were allegedly from a cave which would have protected them from the elements. The Columbia River region is known for basket maker cultures, using the native plants such as bear grass, cedar tree bark, and hemp to make vessels and other woven items. These mat fragments may be cedar bark, which was used for making mats for flooring and bedding. Size of stone: 5.5" L x 4.5" W (14 cm x 11.4 cm)
