Description:

Native American, Southern United States, Sainte Genevieve County Missouri, Mississippian, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An impressive chert stone hoe head or digging tool, with a rounded spade-like profile. The stone is hand-knapped to create a sharp edge around the wide blade and a notched neck. The chert, the ideal material for such tools, is a creamy beige and brown hue. Knapping involved hitting a harder stone against the chert to flake it to the desired form. Although a simple process, it required great skill and patience to achieve the desired shape without shattering or chipping off too much! The notched neck enabled the stone to be hafted onto a pole to make a tool suitable for utilitarian use, such as cutting, scraping, or digging. Size: 5" L x 4.25" W (12.7 cm x 10.8 cm); Size of case: 12.125" W x 8.125" H (30.8 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
