Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Pueblo Indians, possibly Tewa group, ca. late 19th century CE. A striking Pueblo dance shield comprised of a circular piece of thick buffalo hide with a depiction of a buffalo at the center presenting a circular russet red visage delineated with stylized eyes and mouth in black and cream, a band of red dots over the head, and prominent black horns. The buffalo is surrounded by a border with various motifs including two crooked arrows as well as radiating bands of aqua, russet red, and black against a white ground. Nice hide tassels further adorn the visage, and two hide handles are on the verso. Size: 14.25" W x 13.125" H (36.2 cm x 33.3 cm)

Bending to overall form commensurate with age, with minor fading and abrasions to original pigmentation, nicks to front, peripheries, and verso, otherwise intact and excellent.
