Description:

North America, Native American, ca. 1800-1900 CE. This is a hafted Native American hand axe with an eccentric "tang" on the bottom. It was hafted perhaps sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century to the slender piece of wood that it has as a handle with wood straps that are lashed with leather. The stone axe head has a full groove and an almost rounded or bulbous back end. The tang sticks out in front of the shaft or handle and has been lashed to it with leather. The axe comes to a grinded ending that is not particularly sharp.

Provenance: Ex-Walter Young Collection, CO; Ex-Norman Lane Collection, CA.
