North America, United States, Midwestern to Northeastern, likely Woodland tribes or non-native, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A traditional crooked knife, also known as a mocotaugan, a form that originated among Eastern Woodland Native American cultures and was used primarily for woodworking and carving. This example features a leather sheath, and a curved wooden handle decorated with incised diamond and heart motifs. The steel blade - possibly repurposed from a straight razor - is mounted into the handle and secured with iron wire wrapping. Valued for its precision and versatility, the crooked knife was later adopted by European settlers and craftspeople as well, becoming a tool of cross-cultural utility. Size in sheath: 9" L x 0.8" W (22.9 cm x 2 cm); blade: 3" L x 0.5" W (7.6 cm x 1.3 cm)
