Description:

Native American, Southwest, ca. 1885 to 1890 CE. A striking Zuni bichrome pottery bowl presenting a stepped rim to represent the four cardinal directions - North, South, East, and West. The rim is further delineated with a double-line black-painted border and eight tadpole motifs adorn both the interior as well as the exterior walls - with one pair on the interior and one pair on the exterior of each stepped section. A beautiful Zuni vessel, replete with impressive artistry, technique, and symbolic meaning. To the Zuni, tadpoles traditionally represent water which was, not surprisingly, sacred to the indigenous peoples of the desert. The existence of tadpoles indicated plentiful water and by extension symbolized fertility. Size: 13.5" W x 5" H (34.3 cm x 12.7 cm)
