Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo / Pueblo, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A substantial sterling silver cuff bracelet showcasing five oval turquoise cabochons set in scalloped bezels. The vibrant stones are framed by raised silver granules and bordered with finely stamped designs along the edges. The inner band bears the stamp "STERLING C. CHAMA," possibly by silversmith Clarence Chama. Size: 3" L x 1.5" W (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm); interior: 2.5" Diameter (6.4 cm); gap opening: 1" W (2.5 cm); silver quality: 91% to 92%; weight: 196.7 grams

There appear to be two silversmiths using the name C. Chama. One hallmark is stamped in both upper- and lower-case letters, "C. Chama," often accompanied by a feather motif. Another hallmark appears in all uppercase letters, "C. CHAMA," without the feather. Some sources attribute the feather signature to Clarence Chama (Kewa/Santo Domingo Pueblo) and the uppercase stamp to a Navajo artist, while others reverse these attributions. At present, we have not identified any credible or definitive references to confirm which attribution is correct. The present piece is stamped "STERLING C. CHAMA."
