Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. late 20th century CE. A sandpainting on particleboard signed E. Hunt, depicting a ceremonial scene titled "The Sun and Eagle & Holy Plants." At the center is an anthropomorphic eagle figure framed within a circular sunburst of eagle feather rays in red, white, yellow, and black. To either side are stylized cornstalks, sacred plants within Navajo cosmology. An inscription by the artist on the verso reads: "Navajo Sand painting 'The Sun and Eagle + Holy Plants.' The four feathers are for the four ages, the four seasons, and also the four directions of the earth. The figure in the center is the eagle. The Holy plants are the corn use in ceremonial. The rainbows are a bridge between heaven and earth. / E. Hunt." Size: 17.8" L x 11.8" W (45.2 cm x 30 cm)
