Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A vibrant Pre-Columbian bowl from the Chinesco tradition of ancient Nayarit, its surface adorned with rhythmic, petal-like curves in warm red-orange slip against a cream ground. The gently rounded form rises from a flat base, its walls flaring subtly to a wide, circular rim bordered by a thin red band. Both the exterior and interior feature an elegant repeating scallop pattern, creating a sense of motion and balance that draws the eye inward like a blossoming flower. Chinesco pottery, often categorized by stylized human figures and refined vessels, is part of the broader shaft tomb tradition of West Mexico, where such bowls were placed alongside the deceased as offerings for the afterlife. This example reflects a taste for geometric harmony and saturated color typical of Nayarit ceramicists during the Late Formative to Early Classic period. Size: 6.6" Diameter x 3.3" H (16.8 cm x 8.4 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Collins, Colorado, USA collection, acquired via inheritance; label on underside implies it was acquired in October 1974, possibly in Holland
