Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A Chinesco pottery figure standing with rounded limbs and torso, the hands resting against the thighs and the broad hips evoking themes of fertility. The surface is covered in a rich red slip with bold white facial markings. Figures of this type belong to what archaeologists call the shaft-tomb culture - communities that interred their dead in deep vertical shafts leading to horizontal chambers. Within these tombs, individuals were often buried alongside offerings such as this figure, intended to accompany the deceased into the afterlife as a guardian, companion, or symbolic embodiment of life, fertility, and protection. Size: 8" L x 4" W (20.3 cm x 10.2 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
