Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming hand-built pottery figure from the Nayarit culture, representing a seated female figure with legs extended in a wide stance and arms resting on the hips. The stylized face is defined by a prominent nose, incised eyes, and small ears, while the figure wears a flat cap or headdress. Traces of red and black pigment highlight the figure's facial features, collar, chest strap, belt, and loincloth, suggesting ceremonial or social status. This figure likely belonged to the Chinesco style, known for its rounded forms and expressive features, and would have been used in a tomb context as a funerary offering, embodying the presence of the deceased or a guardian spirit. Size: 5" W x 6.2" H (12.7 cm x 15.7 cm)
