Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A deeply expressive figure from the Chinesco tradition of ancient Nayarit, this hand-modeled ceramic effigy captures the vitality and stylized elegance that define West Mexican shaft tomb art. The figure kneels in a poised and symmetrical posture, thighs wide, back straight, and arms pressed confidently against the hips - a pose associated with ceremonial presence or ancestral reverence. The surface bears the rich black and red slip typical of Type C Chinesco wares, accented with faded cream tones that once highlighted facial and body paint. The head is boldly modeled, with a large domed forehead, sloped oval eyes, and a narrow nose bridging a sharply incised mouth. Traces of cross-hatched red lines and dotted patterns along the arms and shoulders evoke ceremonial body adornment, perhaps echoing scarification or ritual paint. Size: 3" L x 4.4" W x 7.3" H (7.6 cm x 11.2 cm x 18.5 cm)

Figures of this type are associated with elite burials in the Nayarit region and often represent community members, ancestors, or intermediaries between the living and the dead. Their presence in tombs speaks to a worldview in which the body - decorated, formal, and composed - functioned as a vessel of memory, identity, and cosmological connection.
