Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A charmingly expressive seated female figure from the Nayarit tradition, modeled with round cheeks, prominent ears, and a subtle smile that radiates warmth and presence. Her nose is pierced, and she wears a distinct headband over a rounded coiffure. The body is enveloped in a red slip, with black linear motifs radiating from the chest and waist - possibly representing garment folds, ceremonial scarification, or body paint applied for ritual display. Her arms are bent at the elbows: one hand extends forward, while the other holds a small bowl or cup set upon her shoulder. Whether these gestures reflect offering, gesture, or simple composure is left open to interpretation, but they lend the figure a quiet sense of intent and individuality. Size: 4.8" L x 8.3" W x 10.8" H (12.2 cm x 21.1 cm x 27.4 cm)

Figures of this type were typically placed in shaft tombs, arranged in lively ensembles that echoed scenes from daily or ceremonial life. This sculptural tradition, unique to the Nayarit region of western Mexico, favored bold geometry, compact proportions, and richly symbolic decoration. Whether commemorating a revered ancestor, priestess, or honored matron, this figure's striking form and painted embellishments speak to enduring themes of identity, ritual, and remembrance in ancient West Mexican belief.
