Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming hand-built pottery figure depicting a seated female figure wearing a knee-length skirt. The mother presents with a wide torso, globular breasts, and rounded shoulders, with one arm supporting a tall bowl in her lap, and the other curled around the bottom of her small child. Her elongated head boasts coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a prominently-crested nose, full lips surrounding a gaping mouth, and tab-shaped ears adorned with several small rings, all beneath a simple cap. Slip pigment in hues of cream and vermilion cover the body, and dark manganese deposits imbue the figure with a polychrome presentation. Size: 5.5" W x 7.4" H (14 cm x 18.8 cm).
