Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming redware pottery figure seated with lengthy legs crossed in front of a wide abdomen. The tab-shaped protrusion from the center of the waistband indicates male genitalia. Rounded shoulders taper downwards to severely-stunted arms which suggest this figure was born with a physical deformity; note the detail of the heavy-swollen elbows. The expressive visage is defined by raised ovoid eyes, thin ears, a smiling mouth full of stylized teeth, and a bulbous nose boasting an enormous plug with a curled tip, all beneath a simple headband. An interesting example covered in deep red slip and decorated with yellow-white pigment. Size: 6.375" W x 9.25" H (16.2 cm x 23.5 cm).

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1940-1960
