Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large, impressively modeled, and extensively decorated female figure seated upon a two-legged stool. Although nude with revealed breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, her body with its characteristically wide torso and hands positioned just beneath her breasts is covered with mesmerizing tattoos in striated and spiraled patterns created via black-on-red negative resist. Her visage, which is also adorned with tattoos, is quite expressive with open, coffee-bean shaped eyes, a prominent curved nose adorned with a nose ring, cup-shaped ears decorated with shell-shaped ornaments, and an open mouth as if singing or chanting, all crowned by a meticulously incised coiffure. Size: 8.625" W x 14.625" H (21.9 cm x 37.1 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired between 1969 and 1985
