Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A necklace strung with ancient copper-silver beads and a tweezer as the pendant. The beads range in composition, from 23% 91% silver and the remainder is copper. Metal tweezers in Peru served both practical and symbolic roles, often accompanying the dead as grave goods. They were closely associated with facial depilation practices - especially beard plucking. These implements were typically cold-worked from a single piece of metal, most often copper-tin bronze or copper-silver alloy. Size of strand doubled: 24" L (61 cm); tweezer: 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 17% to 91%; weight: 44 grams

Provenance: ex-Robert Morris Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; ex-Arte Textile, San Francisco, California, USA
