Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of a sizable form with a round but stable base, tall walls, and a thin rim surrounding the deep basin. The highly burnished exterior exhibits a buffware lower body surmounted by a thick red stripe, and above is a white-ground register depicting six abstract parrots in flight. The colorful feathers of each bird stand out elegantly against the white pigment, and their stylized presentation is characteristic of high-quality Nazca artistry. Size: 7.7" W x 4.6" H (19.6 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired before 1960
