Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A polychrome terracotta bowl of flaring conical form, beautifully decorated in the classic Nazca palette of red, cream, and black. The interior remains plain, while the exterior features a striking geometric design: the lower body painted in quadrants of alternating black and cream, divided by a red band encircling the vessel. The rim is adorned with a bold frieze of abstract motifs outlined in black and filled with red, likely stylized vegetal or symbolic forms, enclosed within cream-colored panels. Size: 5.6" Diameter x 2.5" H (14.2 cm x 6.4 cm)
Nazca ceramic painters were celebrated for their mastery of line and color, producing some of the most visually sophisticated pottery of the ancient Americas. This vessel exemplifies their ability to integrate geometric order with rhythmic, almost textile-like motifs, resulting in a harmonious balance of structure and movement. Such bowls were often used in feasting, ritual libations, or funerary offerings, their brilliant designs serving as both practical decoration and spiritual expression.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
