Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a round but stable base, a spherical body with a gently sloped shoulder, and a stirrup-shaped handle arching between a pair of conical spouts. The highly burnished, cream-slipped body presents with a pair of abstract creatures with feline bodies, grey-and-black tails, and heads resembling the long-whiskered Underworld God with projecting tongues. The Underworld Deity represents the concept of dualism - life and death, male and female, night and day - that determined the religious beliefs and practices of many ancient Andean societies. Size: 5.4" W x 6.125" H (13.7 cm x 15.6 cm)

Provenance: private Copeland collection, Boulder, Colorado, USA, acquired before 1990
