Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca-Wari (Huari), ca. 450 to 850 CE. A pottery owl with a hollow form body and several vent holes encircle the neck. The large eyes are impressed, and the plumicorns resemble cat ears, adding undeniable charm to this strikingly painted effigy! While this may have been simply an effigy figurine, this could have also functioned as a rattle. Owls are nocturnal hunters, and associated with the underworld in many Pre-Columbian cultures, their haunting calls at night were often omens of death or believed to be the embodiment of spirits. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
