Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery vessel with a rounded base, gently-sloping walls, and a pair of cylindrical spouts with a stirrup-shaped handle arching in-between. The highly-burnished vessel is decorated with a maroon-hued slip, and a wide register of abstract, feline-bodied creatures with broad whiskers and projecting tongues adorns the body in hues of grey, black, orange, white, and red. Size: 5.25" W x 6.8" H (13.3 cm x 17.3 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to spouts, handle, body, and base, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice craquelure to some areas of pigmentation.
