Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A beautiful textile strap comprised of tightly-woven cotton fibers in hues of crimson, emerald-green, coffee, wheat, and cream. The strap exhibits primarily red hues on either side with a repeating register of pyramidal, stepped, and checkerboard motifs, and each end boasts frilled terminals. Included with the strap is a large discoid pectoral comprised primarily of copper with the rest of the alloy comprised of silver (27%). Size (strap): 83" L x 2" W (210.8 cm x 5.1 cm); size (pectoral): 4.6" Diameter (11.7 cm); quality of silver in copper-silver alloy: 27%.

  • Condition: Small fissures to interior area of pectoral, with light abrasions across obverse and reverse. Textile strap repaired from two large sections, with loosening and fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, light fading and staining to original coloration, and small areas of loss. Nice patina on pectoral. Colors and iconography of textile are still visible and vivid.
