Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 250 to 540 CE. An interesting Nazca ceramic jar, the lower portion of the vessel of a rounded form resolving to a sharply constricted upper end below a flaring neck, all hand painted in hues of brick red, orange, cream, white, and black-brown. The neck features iconography of trophy heads with stylized hair full of zoomorphic serpentine forms, narrow oval eyes with barely visible round pupils, arched brows, and animal-like mouths. This ornate decoration is in strong contrast to the lower body, which is a simple unadorned cream color. Size: 5.65" W x 5.75" H (14.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Gill collection Florida, USA; ex Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York City, USA; ex-Splendors of the World collection, Maui, Hawaii, USA; ex-Westermann collection, Germany, around 1960
