Lot 169A
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A painted pottery beaker decorated with a polychrome frieze of two Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings, figures that combine human traits with animal masks and supernatural attributes. The beings are shown frontally with mask-like faces, wide eyes, and elaborate headpieces, their forms arranged in a continuous register around the rim. The Anthropomorphic Mythical Being is one of the most common motifs in Nazca art, likely rooted in earlier Paracas textile imagery. It embodies the intersection of human and divine, often linked with themes of shamanism, transformation, and fertility. The lower body of the vessel is left plain in cream slip, framed by red-brown painted bands. Nazca beakers such as this were used in ritual feasting and libation ceremonies, their bold imagery reinforcing the role of supernatural forces in daily and ceremonial life. Size: 4.2" Diameter x 6.5" H (10.7 cm x 16.5 cm)
