Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A gorgeous jar of a near-miniature size, hand-carved from honey yellow alabaster, that is intended to hold small volumes of kohl eye makeup. The vessel bears a flat foot that protrudes slightly beneath the apple-shaped body and rounded shoulders, and the squat upper rim was perhaps meant to accommodate a lid. The smooth exterior texture is indicative of high polishing in ancient times, and the drilled-out interior cavity still retains traces of the original, dark-colored kohl material. Size: 1.625" W x 1.3" H (4.1 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: private Salisbury, Maryland, USA collection; ex J. Slocum collection, prior to 1980
