Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 13th Dynasty, ca. 2130 to 1650 BCE. A necklace of wearable form strung with 15 spherical carnelian beads to create a colorful composition. Interspersed among the ancient stone beads are 12 modern oblong quartz beads, several modern turquoise-hued seed beads, as well as brass bulbs with filigree threads, each included to create a chromatic feast for the eyes. Size (necklace): 17.625" L (44.8 cm); (center carnelian): 0.61" L x 0.48" W (1.5 cm x 1.2 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection; ex-D. Meyerson Estate, California, USA, acquired 1980s to 1990s; ex-private Peterson collection, purchased June 2, 1949 at Buddha Store, Cairo, Egypt; found at Deir el-Bahari, Egypt in 1946

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Carnelian beads are ancient; quartz beads, stringing, metal findings, brass bulbs, and turquoise-hued seed beads are modern. Minor abrasions and light discoloration to some ancient beads, otherwise intact and very good. Great composition.
