Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely bloodstone jasper set in a fine gold ring setting, featuring a bust of Ceres or Demeter. The dark green stone is naturally flecked with red inclusions, and hand-etched with a bust of the goddess facing left in profile and atop her coiffure is a crown made from sheafs of wheat. The domed stone is set in a formfitting bezel and supported on broad and grooved shoulders that taper into a flattened shank. This ring is wearable and in excellent condition. In ancient Roman religion, Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, and fertility. The Romans saw her as the counterpart of the Greek goddess Demeter, whose mythology was reinterpreted for Ceres in Roman art and literature. Size (intaglio): 0.90" L x 0.65" W (2.3 cm x 1.7 cm); (band opening): 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); gold quality: 50.3% (equivalent to 12K); weight: 8.2 grams; US ring size: 10
