Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine carnelian intaglio of circular form set into a gold ring to be wearable. Boasting a vibrant hue of vermilion, the intaglio features the image of a seated male, shown nude and facing right as he holds up a kantharos - a 2-handled wine-cup usually associated with the Roman god of wine Bacchus or Greek Dionysos. The branch of a tree hangs above this muscular youth, who displays strong abdominal muscles and a thick head of wavy hair. His sword lays below him, while his shield leans on a tree before him, all suggesting that he is perhaps a soldier celebrating a victory. Formed from a single sheet of gold, the band has been decoratively incised with an undulating striation that encircles the intaglio, as well as many spiraling motifs and crosses with flared arms. Size (ring): 0.9" Diameter (2.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.5" Diameter (1.3 cm); US ring size: 7
