Western Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A dazzling ring of a petite size with a body and shank that are formed from 73.3% gold. Within the ovoid ring bezel is a hand-carved, vermilion-hued carnelian intaglio featuring a right-facing depiction of Mars (Greek Ares), the Roman god of war. Mars presents nude whilst holding the top of a lengthy spear in his right hand and balancing a large shield on its bottom with his left hand, all while donning his signature helmet atop his slightly bowed head.
